Monochrome III

Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Clarinet in Bb 4, Clarinet in Bb 5, Clarinet in Bb 6, Clarinet in Bb 7, Clarinet in Bb 8, Clarinet in Bb 9 — Monochrome means, of course, “one color,” and each of the pieces in this series is written for a multiple number of a single kind of instrument. Beyond that limitation, however, there is no attempt to restrict the palette; each Monochrome explores a variety of harmonic, rhythmic, melodic and timbral textures.Monochrome III is written in two large sections, each section employing a rondo-like form with a Coda at the end. The first part shows a certain amount of jazz influence, while the second part revolves around a simple waltz melody.—Peter Schickele
