Description
Clarinet in Bb, Violin, Cello, Piano — BRIDGES was originally commissioned as a quartet for Bb Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Erhu, and Pipa, as a four-movement work premiered in 2006. In the following years, the composer added a fifth movement and created an orchestral version and several chamber versions - some mixing Western and Chinese instruments, and some for Western instruments only. The scoring for Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano was created and premiered in 2025. The suite depicts inspiring bridges from the US and China:1. Railroad Trestle Bridge in Galax, Virginia uses the motoric rhythm of a train and the sound of a fiddle and banjo playing country music.2. Stone Bridge over a Reflecting Pool in Suzhou is based on a traditional Chinese song called "Moli Hua" or "Jasmine Flower."3. The Golden Gate Bridge recalls the folk music revival of the 1960's and 70's in California, also including the Chinese folksong “Liu Yang River” to reflect the culture of the Bay Area.4. The Brooklyn Bridge alludes to the vibrant be-bop era in New York City, including indirect hints at Gershwin's “I Got Rhythm.” The composer has noted that pop standards have bridge sections.5. The Mackinac Bridge is based on the folksong “The Water is Wide.” The movement is named for the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere, spanning the wide expanse of water over the straits of Mackinac, connecting Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. BRIDGES for Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano is a 5-movement suite inspired by bridges in the United States and China. While the musical style is strongly influenced by American popular music of various genres, there are also references to folk music from China where Victoria Bond has often conducted orchestras. The present scoring is the fifth instrumentation Bond has created for BRIDGES, indicating that it is one of the composer's own favorites.
