Description
Flute, Piano — In 2023, I sat down at the piano and began improvising an unaccompanied melody, and from a few phrases, When We Used to Dance was born. The piece is a dialogue between the flute and piano, two dancers who join hands from the operatic introduction to the virtuosic waltz, which includes a surprise jazz swing in the accompaniment; but by the end, their dance is only a memory. Even when the “dancers” come together, there is a sense of profound longing that permeates throughout, and I invite all performers to weave their yearning into the notes. WHEN WE USED TO DANCE is an elegantly nostalgic dialogue between the flute and piano that evokes two dancers joining hands from an operatic introduction to a virtuosic waltz. By the end, their dance is only a memory, leaving us with a sense of profound longing. The composer invites all performers to weave their yearning into the notes.
