Description

Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello — Renaissance debates over musical systems were more than academic—they could shape a composer's legacyLUSITANO IN VICENTINO'S COUNTRY captures the spirited intellectual clash between Vicente Lusitano, a Portuguese composer and priest of mixed African and European descent, and Italian theorist Nicola Vicentino. The two engaged in a dramatic debate over chromaticism and tuning systems so influential that the Vatican had to intervene, ruling in Lusitano's favor. Despite this, Vicentino’s narrative prevailed in historical memory, marginalizing Lusitano’s achievements. The quartet mirrors this struggle, beginning with biting dissonances and rhythmic motifs articulating Lusitano’s full name. Chromatic harmonies and asymmetrical rhythms intensify the musical tension, while a slower, descending modal section evokes Lusitano’s spiritual core. A brief nod to African rhythmic traditions leads into a somber finale—reflecting both the injustice Lusitano endured and his lasting strength. Nkeiru Okoye holds a mirror to a nearly 500-year-old struggle in this single-movement work for string quartet. In 1551, the Portuguese composer, theorist, and priest Vicente Lusitano (who was of partially African descent) debated Italian composer and theorist Nicola Vincentino on the topics of tuning systems and harmony in the music of their time. Lusitano won the debate, yet his position and legacy were marginalized in history by Vincentino’s. Okoye’s multi-layered music calls for Lusitano to be remembered, and depicts the struggle between the two composers with a mix of African rhythms, tunes evoking Renaissance modality, and modern, biting dissonances.
