Description

Flute — In 2015, the flute virtuoso Laurel Zucker released an album called Lil Lite O’ Mine: Flute Music by Composers of African Descent. I was honored to have a couple of pieces included on that album.Recently I decided to write a new piece dedicated to Laurel. That piece called FLIGHT begins slowly and then suddenly takes off like a bird on its maiden voyage leaping from a cliff. After a torrid swing through the sky, the young bird lands gently. This inspiring 4½-minute solo has drama, beauty, idiomatic flashiness, and an opening theme in minor that comes back in a triumphant major key. The composer has written, “FLIGHT begins slowly, then suddenly takes off like a bird on its maiden voyage leaping from a cliff. After a torrid swing through the sky, the young bird lands gently.” FLIGHT is within reach of dedicated students, and very effective for professional recitals.
