Flute, Clarinet in Bb — “Hidden in plain sight,” the last movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 sneaks in a development section that begins with a jarring 11-tone parody of the movement’s main theme. Dorff’s oddly charming two-part invention parodies the parody, transforming Mozart’s surprise into a series of variants occasionally teasing at other familiar repertoire.
