Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Violoncello — Pann’s Third String Quartet (Los Tangos Azules) was imagined as dance music for a solitary couple commanding the stage through four scènes de ballet. The colors and gestures of this music span the spectrum from light to dark, but the aromas tend toward the sinister. Los Tangos Azules was commissioned for the Ajax Quartet by a single gentleman whose musical vision and tastes dance from the comedic to the moribund, including everything in between. Carter Pann’s THIRD STRING QUARTET is an 18-minute suite of four atmospheric tangos, which the composer suggests may be accompanied on stage by authentic tango dancers. The darkness and mysterious teasing of tango style blend with Pann’s contemporary voice in varying ways throughout the four contrasting movements. Enticing colors and gestures span the spectrum from light to dark, while the aromas tend toward the sinister.
