Horn in F, Piano — Autumn Rondo was commissioned by my dear friend, Heather Pettit Johnson, as a birthday gift for her husband, one of the the most distinguished horn players of our time, David Johnson — founding member of the American Horn Quartet, prize winner in the Geneva International Horn Competition, principal horn player of several orchestras in Europe and the United States, and currently professor of Horn at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland.The title refers to the time of year of David’s birthday, and to the work’s traditional ABACA rondo form. AUTUMN RONDO is filled with buoyant energy, with a rollicking rhythm supporting a horn line that sings and soars throughout — a joyful tribute to David’s fantastic playing, and a loving gift to David from his wife, Heather.
