Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Piano — CARTAS DE FRIDA (“Frida’s Letters”) is based on letters by the 20th-century Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. The work’s three movements—“Passion,” “Turmoil,” and “Inner Peace”—reflect elements of Kahlo’s turbulent and fascinating life, including her marriage to painter Diego Rivera. The vibrant music, written for the Cassatt String Quartet, is in Zyman’s signature style, blending full-voiced Romanticism with Latin American rhythms.
