English Horn, Flute 1, Flute 2, Oboe 1, Oboe 2, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Bassoon 1, Bassoon 2, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Trumpet in C 1, Trumpet in C 2, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Percussion, Harp, Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Violoncello, Contrabass — From Erebus and Black Night was commissioned by James Freeman and Swarthmore College for Dorothy Freeman and the Swarthmore Chamber Orchestra. It was first performed in October of 1980. The title refers to a passage form the cosmogony of Hesiod: From primeval Chaos came forth Erebus (the underworld) and Black Night.
