For many, it presents an opportunity to express peace and goodwill towards others in various ways. The lyrics of the three songs used in this medley, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, The First Noel, and Go Tell It on the Mountain, are all specifically written to spread the message of Christmas. I encourage you to open a dialogue with students about the dedication of the piece: “To all who spread the message of peace and goodwill.” Ask them to consider ways in which they personally spread that message. The introduction should be played with anticipation, like something of importance is on the horizon. Accented notes should be played as bell tones with a pronounced attack and sudden decrescendo. Measures 9–28 should be played in an animated and excited manner. The grand pause in m. 28 should be three to four full counts. In mm. 29–32 and 41–44 take care that the fourth note of each measure is tongued. A slight crescendo and decrescendo on that fourth note will give the two sections a sense of “lift” and motion. Measures 53–57 should be played with a full and powerful symphonic tone.I hope that you and your students enjoy the musical opportunities presented in Messages of Christmas and that everyone, including the audience, enjoy these messages of peace and goodwill. xa0 The Christmas season means different things to people around the world.
