Description

Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — It is typical of my writing style to write the piece first and decide on a title later. This piece is no exception. When I completed the work, I realized that it had a sort of majestic, heroic, chivalrous sound to it; hence the title Gallant. With that in mind, the piece should be performed in a stately manner as if processional music for a king and queen in times of old. It is also one of those pieces (similar to others that I have written) that I would call “pseudo-classical,” which means that it has a classical flavor to it, but uses modern harmonic and compositional techniques. The middle section of the piece moves to the relative minor starting with a new theme in the celli that is followed by a minor version of the main theme in counterpoint between the viola and cello as contrast to the other full-ensemble sections of the work. This eventually leads back to the major key for a final statement of the main theme and short coda to complete thepiece. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy itand find it useful for your program.—LARRY CLARKLakeland, FL 2009 This is an original piece by Larry Clark in a classical style, evoking the majestic stateliness of kings and queens. Gallant has all of the trademark Larry Clark touches: singable melodies, rhythmic verve, playability, and musical interest for all of the instruments in the orchestra. A welcome addition to the school string orchestra repertoire.
