The Slider (March)

Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — The Slider, a march for intermediate strings, interweaves a technical challenge for beginning string players into the framework of a fun and entertaining march. In first position, string players are limited to the open strings and four additional notes per string where their fingers fall. The challenge of the teacher is to get students to find those elusive chromatic notes in between the first-position finger placements, especiallyin regard to the pinky finger. Many pedagogues teach a way to find thosenotes by sliding to them from the known positions. This march explores that technical challenge in a fun and musical way and gives all the members of the ensemble a chance to share in the musical material. Here is an original march for strings that helps to refine the skill of sliding between notes on the same string. It tackles a challenging technique, but one that will be fun to work on with a tuneful march in standard form.
