Description
Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — In this lively AABA ensemble piece in D major, all sections play an integralrole in successful performance. Each section of the string orchestra has achance to function independently. The driving introduction features Violin II and Viola on the main theme, supported by a pizzicato double-stop pattern in Violin I and a forward-moving pedal point in Cello and Bass. The dynamic softens at m. 9, and Violin I takes over with a singing, legato melody over quiet accompaniment figures in the other sections. Still energetic and moving forward at a soft dynamic, the piece builds at m. 17 with the upper strings carrying the melody over the pulsing lower strings. The Cellos are highlighted with the legato melody in the bridge at m. 25 and hand off the melody to the upper strings in m. 29.The return to the ‘A’ melody at m. 38 is grandiose and flowing with all sections playing legato. An abrupt change to Δ in the interlude at m. 41 features a harmonic shift to a ‘C natural’ pedal point in the low strings and interaction between Violin II/Viola and Violin I. Measure 49 is the most noble statement of the main melody, featuring the upper strings over a descending scale in the lower strings. The surprising subito Δ at m. 56 begins the build-up to the end, punctuated by a short sixteenth-note scale figure in the final measure. Undeniably this piece is Alan Lee Silva at his best. The melody seems effortless, the harmony is just right and the piece flows seamlessly from section to section. This is a well-crafted minature masterpiece for young string orchestras. Everything about it is just so right!
