Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Double Bass — "Viking Song" is a vibrant arrangement of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's work, crafted to be both accessible and rewarding for young string players. This piece captures the adventurous spirit of the Vikings through its bold melodies and rhythmic drive, providing an engaging challenge that elevates the orchestra's sound. By emphasizing rich harmonies and dynamic contrasts, this arrangement allows developing musicians to explore mature musical expression, making them sound well beyond their years. It's a piece that inspires confidence and showcases the potential of young performers in a way that is both satisfying and musically fulfilling. Make sure to emphasize the importance of watching the conductor with this piece and highlight the key changes.  I hope you enjoy working on this piece, taking a trip to the past when the Vikings sailed the seas. Published in 1911, Viking Song is a spirited sea-faring song. It is speculated that Coleridge-Taylor composed the song for students during his tenure at the Crystal Palace School of Music in London. The lyrics and accented melody depict clanging anvils hammered by mythical Thor and Odin as steel ships are forged in the fire. Like many vocal songs of the day, the piece features key changes at each new verse. This accessible arrangement for string orchestra modulates from C major to G major, ending back in C major as the strong, lilting melody is passed between sections of the orchestra.
