Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb, Horn in F, Trombone, Euphonium, Bb Euphonium, Tuba, Mallet Percussion, Bells, Percussion 1, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Percussion 2, Triangle — Reaching the Summit is a composition for beginning bands in their first year of playing. Beginning band students are continuously learning new skills on their instruments and striving to eventually play a full piece of music with non-unison parts. These young musicians are pushing themselves to “reach their summit.” In mm. 33–36 and again in the final few measures the students play a repeated syncopated rhythm. They build upon each others sound to reach the peak of their musical journey in Reaching the Summit. Reaching the Summit is a composition for beginning bands in their first year of playing. Beginning band students are continuously learning new skills on their instruments and striving to eventually play a full piece of music with non-unison parts. In this piece, young musicians build upon each other's sound to reach the peak of their musical journey.
