Trumpet in Bb, Piano — Selected for the International Trumpet Guild's Solo Competition in 2020, Ulysses Kay's Tromba for Trumpet and Piano is elegant, with a propulsive quasi-neoclassical harmonic motion that is characteristic of Kay's work. Mentored by William Grant Still at the University of Arizona, Kay was an impressive composer by any metric, winning a Fulbright Scholarship, the prestigious Rome Prize, and a Julius Rosenwald Fellowship. Lyrical, sophisticated, and not without an edge, Trombawill be a welcome addition to the solo trumpeter's recital repertoire.
