Description

Clarinet in Bb, Trombone, Timpani, Piano, Violin, Violoncello, Contrabass — I arranged Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture for a small group of instruments, both to honor Beethoven’s 250th birthday and to provide a template for the young composers invited to create a new composition as part of the Yale School of Music New Music Workshop in Norfolk, Connecticut. Beethoven’s embodiment of tragic social conflict is a particularly timely and inspiring example for younger composers of how such turbulence and struggle might be revealed in music. Martin Bresnick arranged Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture for a small group of instruments, both to honor Beethoven’s 250th birthday and to provide a template for the young composers invited to create a new composition as part of the Yale School of Music New Music Workshop in Norfolk, Connecticut. In the composer's own words, "Beethoven’s embodiment of tragic social conflict is a particularly timely and inspiring example for younger composers of how such turbulence and struggle might be revealed in music."
