Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, Armonía, Vihuela, Guitar, Guitarrón — La Culebra (The Snake) is a son that is part of the traditional mariachi repertoire. Unlike most sones, which are characterized by syncopated rhythms and an alternation between 3/4 and 6/8 time, La Culebra is set to lively 16th notes in a rhythmic 3/4 feel.  La Culebra translates to ‘the snake’ in English. This dramatic piece tells the story of a group of men who are forced to fend off snakes when their wives visit them in the fields. The piece is often accompanied by a baile folklorico (folk dance), complete with bright-colored dresses, sombreros, intricate footwork, and encouraging whistle calls from both the mariachi and the audience. This piece is composed of three distinct sections in the ABACA form. It opens with a unison rhythmic line that signals the return to the ‘A’ section in the C Major key.  Changes to the dominant and relative minor add drive and intensity to the piece as the story of the snake encounter unfolds.
