Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Horn in F, Trombone, Euphonium, Bb Euphonium, Tuba, Mallet Percussion, Bells, Xylophone, Percussion 1, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Percussion 2, Tambourine, Crash Cymbals, Percussion 3, Maracas, Wood Block — About the Commission:Cove was commissioned by and dedicated to the band students at Lake Middle School, Woodbury, Minnesota, Douglas Bradley, Director.About the Performance:Cove is an exciting young band piece. It features interesting rhythms and percussion writing. For rehearsal purposes, I suggest scheduling a few sectionals with the percussion section. This will help them understand their role as they play with the band. It is of utmost importance that the dynamics are observed and that proper balance between sections and the band be observed. Try to balance the percussion so that the mallet part is heard over the non-mallet parts. The rhythmic vitality is the most important element in creating an exciting performance. The Andante section (m. 29) can be played in an expressive and rubato manner.IMPORTANT NOTE: The trombone part has been written with a divisi. One should play the top line if a euphonium and/or tuba is present in the ensemble to keep from having chord inversions throughout the piece. Be sure to balance the divisi part in the trombone section and throughout the piece so that there is an equal number of players on each part.
