Line and Shadow

Description

Flute 1, Flute 2, Piccolo, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Bassoon 1, Bassoon 2, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Trumpet in C 1, Trumpet in C 2, Timpani, Percussion, Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Violoncello, Contrabass — Line and Shadow attempts to create a musical metaphor for these visual concepts. Closely spaced canons create shades and shadows of simple tunes, making the idea of echo and reverberation a musical analog to the visual resonance created by the way light is reflected and refracted by objects. In other parts of the piece, parallel harmonies create a different impression of musical shadow. While there is not any direct way to translate between sight and sound, it is always interesting to contemplate their relations.
