Happy to Know You

Soprano, Alto, Bass, Piano — What began as a whimsical, off-hand comment in the rehearsal room—"giraffes are just horses with long necks"—unfolded into the heartfelt and present-minded anthem, Happy to Know You Right Now. This piece is a direct invitation to celebrate the magic of the current moment. Singers are invited to be creative with their performance of the different animal metaphors while also showing the character shift back and forth to the warmth and acceptance of the text.That moment of childlike curiosity stopped our rehearsal and opened a beautiful conversation about appreciating things—and people—not for their past or future, but for the unique, wonderful, and sometimes unconventional connections we share in the present. The chorus, "I don't know who you were before... but I'm happy to know you right now," serves as the piece's core philosophy. Ensembles are encouraged to explore the profound simplicity of this idea:How can we release the need to know someone's entire story to validate the truth of a current connection?In a world that often asks us to constantly transform, what does it mean to be loved and accepted exactly as you are in this moment?How do we practice seeing the inherent, quirky "magic" in others, much like the delightful surprise of a giraffe's long neck?A special thank you to the 2024 Bent But Not Broken MS Choir, whose beautiful and open hearts were the soil from which this idea grew.
