Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto, Piano — What began as a personal reflection on growth and mentorship has blossomed into the heartfelt anthem, I Can Be Better. This piece is an invitation to singers to embrace its vulnerable and hopeful narrative. Lean into the sincerity of the text, using dynamic phrasing and expressive staging to illuminate its journey from introspection to affirmation.When teaching this work, I encourage conductors and singers to explore its grounding in the rich traditions of Gospel music and the wider styles of the Black Diaspora. Discuss the use of call-and-response, the importance of rhythmic drive and "feel," and the expressive, soulful treatment of the melody. Whether it be the technical lessons taught in my youth or the profound life lessons he continues to share, the sound of his name makes me want to be a better person.
