Description

Soprano, Alto, Bass — Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, born c. 1564, died 1594, was an Italian composer of the late Renaissance. Known widely as "Palestrina," the name of his home town, he was a prolific composer of sacred Motets and Masses. His enduring legacy of music continues to amaze audiences worldwide with its ethereal reverence. Alma Redemptoris Mater is a motet devoted to the Virgin Mary.Stylistically, there are usually no dynamics in Palestrina's work, rather, crescendos occur as the music rises and diminuendos as it falls, giving the piece an ebb and flow. Dynamics are included, but are merely suggestions; interpretation is open. It is a great opportunity to explore the human voice and to use senza vibrato (no vibrato), to make it stylistically accurate. Alma Redemptoris Mater, arranged for SAB voices with optional divisi, is a thoughtful adaptation of Palestrina’s timeless motet devoted to the Virgin Mary. This arrangement maintains the ethereal beauty and rich polyphonic texture of the original while making it more accessible for choirs of all sizes. The SAB scoring ensures a balanced and approachable setting, while the optional divisi allows for added depth and complexity when desired. Perfect for liturgical settings or concert performance, this arrangement preserves the reverence and serene elegance of Palestrina’s masterpiece.
