Description

Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, Piano — Greensleeves has many historical stories about its origin. Some say it was written by King Henry the 8th while others say that it has Italian influences in its composition. It is believed to be written around 1580 and its secular lyric sings of the loss of someone loved. Today, it is well-known and loved for its sacred, Christmas lyric. My creative intention is a contemporary version of the song, using syllables and the secular lyric. Most certainly the sacred lyric could be used instead, however the overall feel of the piece is contemporary, especially with the 4/4 meter, elongating the melody and allowing the choral vocals to be rhythmic underneath. The piano is optional and can be used in rehearsal only or performance, if desired. As a piece to begin a cappella singing, I hope this brings something fresh and interesting to rehearsals and performances. Greensleeves is a classic melody that should be learned by young singers and will be a moment of the familiar with a modern twist for your audience. This contemporary arrangement reimagines a timeless melody about lost love with a fresh approach, featuring a 4/4 meter that elongates the melody and incorporates rhythmic choral vocals. The secular lyric is used, though the sacred version can be substituted. The optional piano part may support rehearsals or performances as needed. Designed as an accessible introduction to a cappella singing, this setting offers singers a chance to experience a classic tune while providing audiences with a familiar favorite delivered in a modern style.
