Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto, Piano — What started as a joke amongst Choir Directors and singers has evolved into the poem and now this gem known as Red Velvet. Singers should really lean into the theatrics and drama of the text. Staging and play with phrasing is encouraged! I also invite ensembles to discuss how the poetry is both comedic and yet revealing of a deeper context; what it means to stand in your own identity and how others may perceive it.What do we do with feelings of “impostor syndrome?”How do we hold our heads high when others challenge our moments of discovery?How do we love ourselves without diminishing others?Saleel Menon, thank you for giving your gifts to another one of my “wee-hour” projects.
