Description

Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — Intrigue is a cinematic composition for the more advanced string ensemble. The music is inspired by the modern film scoring technique that utilizes pulsing rhythms and broad melodies. This creates a pulse-pounding feeling that can be relentless at times. The opening eighth-note gesture is the basis for the entire piece. It immediately creates this sense of intrigue and pulse pounding excitement. The interjection of pizzicato notes in the lower voices create a lift and accentuation. Keep the sound consistent between the first and second violin parts. The tone at m. 20 changes a bit with more broad, tenuto gestures. Keep the notes thick and intense.A development section follows at m. 28 that explores the rhythmic possibilities of the opening gesture. The development reaches a fever pitch at m. 47 with the accented notes creating a multi-meter effect. The lower voices create a pizzicato tapestry at m. 62 that allows the violins to soar over the top. This builds to an intense passage at m. 94. Bring out the accents to create a multi-rhythmic effect over the top of the celli and basses playing the broad melody. This intensity continues all the way to the dramatic ending. Just as the title suggests, this piece is intriguing from start to finish. It contains all of the signature Sean O'Loughling touches for which his compositions have become so popular: pulsating rhythms, fresh harmonies, and interesting motivicly driven melodic fragments. This piece is fun to play and audiences will love it.
