Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — Nautical Variations is a setting of the sea shanty or whaling song Blow, Ye Winds presented in five contrasting settings. One of the best-known sea ballads it tells the story of a whaling voyage from New Bedford, Massachusetts to the Pacific and back. The traditional lyrics include colorful description of shipboard life in the days of wooden sailing ships. The ship's bell (m. 8 and mm. 99-100) is optional, if used it may be played by any member of the orchestra, OR the conductor. If played, suspend the bell near the designated player.
