Description
Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano, Timpani, Percussion, Crash Cymbals, Suspended Cymbal — The Spring String Fling has been an annual event in the Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) since 2000. Each year, an average of 300 elementary string players and 75 middle-school chamber-orchestra students gather to perform in a massed gala concert. The 2008 concert will feature Celebration and Fanfare, commissioned in conjunction with MCCSD and the music department, and performed by fifth- through twelfth-grade students to celebrate the culmination of the growth of the string program serving grades 4 through 12.The MCCSD is a large suburban district on Long Island, New York. Introduced in January 1999, the string program has grown to include over 800 students and seven string teachers. 2008 marks the graduation of the string students who began study in the MCCSD string program. The conception of Celebration and Fanfare is in large part due to the efforts, thoughts and ideas of the MCCSD string faculty. A special thanks to Diana Cook, Director of Music and Art, who initially suggested a commissioned piece for this occasion, and string teacher Heather Weeks, who acted as editor and faculty gobetween. This piece is one big crescendo. It moves from simple tonic and dominant chords to full, lush harmonies as it develops and builds to a climactic completion. The addition of timpani and cymbals augment the work's bold sound.
