Description
Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — Diabolique (Dya- baw- leek), a. 1. Of the Devil 2. Fiendish: devilish: wicked.Danse Diabolique is a moody piece. It is meant to evoke images of a moonlit Halloween night, alive with fiendish creatures engaged in a demonic dance. Inspired by the work of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, this piece is best characterized by the expressive marking, "sinister."The melody of this 6/8 piece is played in a smooth,xa0legato style in contrast to the crispxa0pizzicato accompaniment. Care should be taken never to rush thexa0pizzicato passages. Dynamics should be emphasized throughout, and sixteenth notes should be played off the string, with accuracy, in a spiccato style. A strong new composition for advancing groups, this dark and mysterious piece is both lyrical and lush. Reminiscent of Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns, this work would be a great addition to any fall concert!
