Description

Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Double Bass — Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen was one of the Classical era’s most successful women composers. Hailing from Venice, she performed throughout Europe as a virtuoso violinist and soprano and saw many of her own compositions published during her lifetime. Thisarrangement from her String Quartet No. 2 published in 1769 introduces students and audiences to her lively and playful compositional style. It is a perfect piece for teaching fundamental Classical era articulation and phrasing concepts and is an exciting choice to open or close your next program! Italian composer, singer, and violinist Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen was born in poverty in 1745. She was able to learn violin at an orphanage for girls, even taking lessons from composer Giuseppe Tartini. As talented a composer as performer, Maddelena is thought to have been the first woman to compose string quartets. This charming Allegro from String Quartet No. 2 has been transposed to accessible G major, while retaining the spirit and energy of the original work.
