The piece opens by alternating between a dotted-quarter-note feel and a straight-quarter-note pulse, creating rhythmic tension and a sense of forward motion. These subtle shifts challenge performers to listen across the ensemble while maintaining a steady internal pulse. At Rehearsal 66, the music moves into a contrasting 4/4-time section built around a driving, syncopated eighth-note groove that heightens intensity and energy. This section provides a strong contrast in both feel and style before the music quickly shifts back, or “changes gears,” returning to the original 3/4 feel. The piece concludes with a bold and energetic ending that brings together the rhythmic ideas introduced throughout the work. Changing Gears is a high-energy, crowd-pleasing concert band work that explores shifting time signatures and contrasting rhythmic feels. Lively 3/4 hemiola-based phrasing gives way to a punchy, syncopated 4/4 groove before the music quickly shifts back, or “changes gears,” driving toward a thrilling conclusion. Packed with momentum and bold contrasts, the piece is an exciting showcase for ensemble precision, groove, and energy.
