As the sun dipped behind the mountains, the path opened to a sweeping view of downtown Vancouver and the Lions Gate Bridge, their lights shimmering across the harbour. This gentle 3/4 melody reflects that moment of stillness — a meeting of home and horizon, of memory and hope. Listeners will hear the steady rhythm of footsteps, the golden glow of sunset, and the quiet majesty of the city settling into night.Notes to ConductorHymn-like Phrasing: Encourage students to think of the melody in long, arched phrases. Despite there not always being a rhythmic motor, encourage the students to feel the fluid movement of 3/4 time and avoid slowing down.Between Phrases: Utilize stagger breathing to connect different phrases. Especially for parts with hairpins, try not to separate those transitions with group breaths.Dynamic Shaping: The expressive swells are essential to the piece. Work on the ensemble’s commitment and independence in executing these swells. Bridge at Twilight is a serene Grade 2 work that captures the quiet majesty of a Vancouver sunset. Inspired by the view of the Lions Gate Bridge from the North Shore, this expressive setting emphasizes warm ensemble colours and lyrical, arched phrasing. It is an ideal selection for developing breath control, choral-style balance, and expressive musicality in a young concert band.
