Over what has amounted to 3 decades, I have written multiple versions of this particular piece before finally feeling like this is “The One.”If I drew a parallel timeline of my musical influences, it would become very clear as to where my concert band influences were, as one of the very first composers I encountered was Robert W. Smith (the major influences at this point otherwise were from video games, and that’s a story for a different piece). “Titan’s Fury” has a very clear structure that I (even 30 years later) have maintained – a very intense melody supported by an ostinato in the low reeds (and sometimes other instruments). The middle slower section is designed to be heroic in nature, lead by the trumpets, horns and saxophones, and ending with a reprise of all of the material at the original tempo. The original version of this piece was premiered in 2019 (under a different title) by the Lafayette Citizens Band (Lafayette, Indiana). Titan’s Fury has a very clear structure that maintains an intense melody supported by an ostinato in the low reeds, and sometimes other instruments.
