Your students or your audience can vote whether the sailor ending or the pirate ending is performed in this unique open-ended piece. Your students will have the educational benefit of learning both endings! There are frequent dynamic changes. Exaggerate all sudden contrasts. All of the shouted vocalizations should be short and percussive. (Except for the Arrrr if the pirate ending is chosen.)Measures 28-40 are meant to depict the ship drifting into a storm. The staccato 8th notes at mm. 33 and 35 are the lightning, while the low notes and bass drum at mm. 34 and 36 are the thunder. Have your bass drum player experiment freely with the notated rolls to make it sound like thunder. If you have extra percussionists, you may let them double the bass drum part and the “thunder parts” on floor toms.Make sure that the transition from the end of the main piece at m. 48 to either the sailor ending at m. 49 or the pirate ending at m. 67 is seamless, without pause.
