For many students, the joy they find in the rehearsal process and collaboration are unmatched. Some students treasure the interaction with their director and fellow band members as highlights of the day. Yet others enjoy the challenge of growing their skills, knowledge, and appreciation for music. Others love how band makes them feel – a kind of intelligence and perspective that makes music so unique. A few students can tap into all three perspectives and experiences.Clap for Joy is written for the band and their director – a celebration of collaborative efforts resulting in wonderful music performances. The piece reinforces basic rhythmic patterns in 6/8 time. Some of these rhythms are repeated, providing an easy opportunity for the entire ensemble to grow more comfortable performing in this meter. Other parts require sections of the band to respond to rhythmic motifs from the percussion section while clapping specific rhythms in unison. At other points, the clapping becomes a unique sound to accompany other sections or provide a dramatic impact.Even though it is a fanfare type piece, young musicians should play and clap with lightness and precision, rather than intensity in volume. The ultimate goal is maintaining the buoyancy inherent in pieces that move at this tempo in 6/8 time. Encourage every musician to listens for the melodic material and balance their part accordingly. Percussion play an integral role throughout the work providing forward motion, dramatic impacts, and providing rhythmic motifs to which woodwinds and brass respond. It is my hope the piece an uplifting way to open your next concert, and a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the joy that happens every day in your rehearsal hall.Thank you in advance for your support of this piece of music, and I wish you and your ensemble the best as the audience begins to Clap for Joy after your performance!—Travis J. Weller Clap for Joy is written for the band and their director – a celebration of collaborative efforts resulting in wonderful music performances. Throughout the piece there are multiple opportunities to reinforce different 6/8 rhythms through playing and clapping a call-and-response between different sections. The piece is a great choice to open your next concert, and a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the joy that happens every day in your rehearsal hall.
