To that point, I had never really written anything that wasn’t at nearly breakneck speed but also at a high difficulty level. This piece was written to prove to myself I could do both at the same time. Over the following years some things about the piece have changed, but the context is the same: a simple melody with an underlying ostinato, supported by a simple bass line with limited complexity. The original version (under a different title) was premiered in 2012 by the Indiana All-District Band (Winchester, Indiana) under the direction of Eric Thornbury.—Bonyea Killebrew A simple and flowing melody highlights this piece depicting the subtle intensity of a clear night on the water. Expressive, beautiful, and quietly brooding, your audience will love this lyrical work.
