Flute, Oboe, Flute 2, Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb, Horn in F, Trombone, Euphonium, Bassoon, Bb Euphonium, Tuba, Mallet Percussion, Bells, Timpani, Percussion 1, Snare Drum, Tom-tom, Bass Drum, Percussion 2, Tom-tom, Suspended Cymbal, Crash Cymbals, Shaker — Zululand, written to honor the Zulu people of South Africa, employs an original melody and orchestration based loosely on the Zulu call-and-response song, “Shaka Mamba,” also making use of a partial setting of “Nkosi Sikelel IAfrika” in the middle section. The percussion plays a prominent role in the piece, giving it a sound authentic to the music of the Zulu people.
