Cello — In putting together this volume, my goal was to include beautiful, accessible pieceswhich are not always found in the existing cello compilations. As the music worldevolves more and more towards outreach concerts and community involvement, I amconstantly looking for short crowd-friendly pieces such as the ones included in this book.As a teacher, I find it useful that many of these works are particularly well suited toisolate specific principles of cello technique. Kreisler’s Schön Rosmarin is an excellentstudy in up-bow staccato, and his Pavane can be used to practice trills and gracenotes. Squire’s At Twilight provides many opportunities to work on extensions, whileSchlemuller’s Cradle Song is great for teaching string crossings. Macdowell’s To a WildRose is a shifting exercise between first, second, third and fourth positions. It was a great pleasure to revisit some of my favorite childhood songs and present themto a modern generation. Each of these little pieces has a story rich in cello tradition, for they were all written by, written for, or arranged by cellists. For example, Fauréoriginally wrote his Sicilienne as a cello piece for William Henry Squire, himself acomposer whose works are among the most beloved in the cello repertoire. Years laterFauré recycled the melody in his incidental music for Pelléas et Mélisande, but not manypeople know that this famous tune was originally written for cello. My hope is that this book will be as fun to play through as it was for me to put together. Carl Fischer’s Repertoire Classics series consists of comprehensive and progressively graded collections of classic solos with piano accompaniment.
