Comprising three movements, the lyrical work invokes artistic storytelling and scenes from the natural world. Beginning with a graceful and elegant Aria, the following Elegy expresses somber undertones, inspired by a phrase from The Gospel at Colonus: "… in the late wind of death he could not stand.” This second movement heavily features a solo viola and solo quintet. Finally, the energetic Dance serves as a tribute to the painting and poetry of the composer’s friend, Richard Beale. Specifically, the poem “Pines” that describes an emotional reaction of awe and joy at the majestic pines “…on this rocky shore.”
