Description

Voice 1, Voice 2, Voice 3, Piano — The power of “one small thing” is evident everywhere in the natural world: One small acorn becomes a huge oak tree. One small stream becomes a raging river. Small things often create great effects. It is important to encourage children with the truth that even though they are still small, they can affect real change, one little bit at a time. It is my hope that this piece helps to do just that. Here are a few suggestions to consider as you rehearse:1. Don’t close to the “n” sound too quickly on the word “one.” Hold the vowel open for as long as possible. Otherwise, it won’t resonate.2. The repeated pattern in the verses of eighth note to sixteenth note can become choppy. Encourage singers to be generous with the sixteenth note, giving it a little more space than they normally would.3. In measures 20-25, the melody goes back and forth between part two and part three. Adjust the dynamics accordingly so that the melody is always prominent.4. This song is a directive to become what we are capable of. It is about hope and encouragement. Help your singers to communicate those emotions with their voices! Karen Crane’s One Small Light is a heartfelt and inspiring piece for three-part mixed voices, perfect for concerts with themes of hope and perseverance. With a gentle yet uplifting melody, this song encourages singers and listeners to embrace their potential and recognize the powerful ripple effects of small acts of kindness and courage. One Small Light reminds us all that even the smallest spark can illuminate the darkest places.
