Description
Voice 1, Voice 2, Piano — My Shadow is taken from a collection of poems entitled A Child's Garden of Verses, by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), an author, poet, and traveler. The work was published in 1885, when Stevenson was 34 years of age. All of the poems in the collection are written from a child's point of view. Stevenson might be best known as the author of Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The text of My Shadow celebrates the thrill a child gets from becoming familiar with his own shadow, as the child expresses the shadow's uniqueness, with curiosity and joy. The music of this original setting is designed to convey and accompany a playful text, giving time for the wonderment a child might express for each new realization of a companion at play.
