Voice 1, Voice 2, Piano — Stories of suffering, fear and despair are universal. Thankfully, so are stories of hope and courage. Based on stories from the Bible, spirituals like Run, Mary, Run are some of the earliest form of religious music within the African American community. While this piece expresses hope for freedom and endurance in a spiritual sense, lyrics such as "run" and "swing low chariot" also encouraged enslaved people to escape slavery for a better life, both in this world and the next. Run, Mary, Run is full of hope, courage, rhythmic integrity, and has an interesting melody. Your treble singers will love singing this heartfelt work.
