Description

Tenor, Bass, Piano — A funicular is a type of cable railway system which connects points along a railway track laid on a steep slope. The system is characterized by two counterbalanced carriages permanently attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable, which is looped over a pulley at the upper end of the track. In 1880, this Neopolitan song was written to celebrate the opening of the first funicular railway on Mount Vesuvius. The song was very popular in Italy and abroad, so much so that, when it was published, it sold a million copies in one year. The original English translation describes a couple traveling up the mountainside and the thrill of their journey. You know this tune is pure FUN from the start — first, it's in the name, and, second, everyone will recognize this classic Italian melody that's been covered by countless performers, including the Grateful Dead and Alvin and the Chipmunks. This clever arrangement is perfect for tenor-bass ensembles of all sizes and is sure to be the hit of any concert!
