Clarinet in Bb, Basset Horn, Piano — The Concert Pieces Op. 113 and 114 make special demands on source critique: both were arranged for concert use with the composer’s permission by the two celebrities who commissioned the pieces: Heinrich Baermann and his son Carl. They were arranged immediately after Mendelssohn had completed them - and been treated to sweet dumplings and cheese strudel by the Baermanns. Subsequent editions unwittingly reproduced the Baermann version without probing its origins. The present new edition (1997) is the first to be based on the autograph.
