Description
Chester Biscardi's The Gift of Life (1990-1993), for soprano and piano, is a song cycle setting texts by Emily Dickinson, Denise Levertov, and Thornton Wilder. Written for soprano Judith Bettina and pianist James Goldsworthy, who premiered the work in Palo Alto, California, on June 27, 1993, the cycle explores themes of birth, memory, loss, death, and ultimately love. The opening song, Dickinson's "Mama Never Forgets Her Birds," was composed as a lullaby celebrating the birth of the performers' daughter, Ariana Tamar Goldsworthy. Drawing on Biscardi's earlier operatic work in Tight-Rope, the cycle reflects his ongoing interest in memory, time, and the cyclical nature of existence through richly evocative musical imagery. This product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill.
