The present collection of forty five CHORAL PRELUDES OF OLD MASTERS (CHORALVORSPIELE ALTER MEISTER), presented in three volumes, may well serve as an introduction to those of Johann Sebastian Bach, since it demonstrates that the forms which Bach used actually emerged in the course of the seventeenth century. Although Bach's great genius outstrips his predecessors in the use of these forms, the organ music of the seventeenth century is well worth examination in its own right. In comparison with the works of the post-Bach period, which have enjoyed long popularity, it shows up to enormous advantage.
