Description
Despite its greater popularity now, Bla Bartk's (1881-1945) CONCERTO FOR PIANO NO. 1 was universally panned by critics after its premiere due to its harshness; the innovative use of tone clusters as pioneered by Henry Cowell and Bartk's use of his characteristic percussive martellato technique stood in stark contrast to Bartk's earlier Baroque-influenced style. To emphasize the importance of percussion in the piece, Bartk stipulated in a note that percussion instruments were to be placed next to the piano during performances. The concerto premiered in Frankfurt in July 1, 1927 with Bartk himself as the soloist. Instrumentation: Solo Pno: 2 (2nd d.Picc). 2 (2nd d.EH).2 (2nd d.BCl).2: 4.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(5) : Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition. The solo piano/piano reduction is also available separately from LudwigMasters (60762001).
