Description
Symphony No. 92 in G major ("Oxford"), Hob. I:92 was composed in 1789 by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) during the final years of his service to the Esterhzy court, just before his celebrated London journeys. The symphony received its nickname from Haydn's visit to England in 1791, when it was performed in connection with the ceremony in which the University of Oxford awarded him an honorary doctorate; although the work had been composed earlier, its successful Oxford performance under Haydn's direction cemented the association. The symphony exemplifies Haydn's mature style, particularly in its lively finale and expressive slow movement. The work reflects the growing international fame Haydn enjoyed at the close of the 18th century, when he was widely regarded as Europe's foremost symphonist. The "Oxford" Symphony remains one of Haydn's most frequently performed symphonies, firmly established in the Classical orchestral repertoire. Instrumentation: 1.2.0.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4.4.3.2-2.2 in set). Reprint of the critical edition by Haydn expert H.C. Robbins Landon.
