Concerto for Alto Saxophone in E-flat, Op. 109

Description

Alexander Glazunov's (1865-1936) CONCERTO FOR ALTO SAXOPHONE in E-flat, Op. 109 was written in 1934. The Russian composer was exposed to the saxophone late in life while staying in Paris, and he found the new timbre enthralling. This single-movement concerto and a saxophone quartet were the result. The work was completed in part due to the famous German saxophonist Sigurd Rasch�r hounding Glazunov to the point where the composer wrote to a colleague that he had started the piece "under the influences of attacks rather than requests from the Danish (sic) saxophonist named Sigurd Rasch�r." The work premiered on November 25, 1934, in Nyk�ping, Sweden, with Rasch�r as the soloist. Glazunov probably did not hear the work performed, however, as the Paris premiere took place after his death. Instrumentation: Str (8-8-5-5-5 in set): Solo Alto Saxophone in set. Reprint edition.
